Parivartini Ekadashi
Parivartini Ekadashi is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapad. It falls within Chaturmas and the Dakshinayana period, which is considered the nighttime of the Devas. This Ekadashi is also called Jaljhilini Ekadashi.
Those who observe the vrat of this Ekadashi and worship Vaman Bhagwan receive fruits equivalent to performing the pooja of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shivji.
Legend says that during Dakshinayana, when Lord Vishnu rests, He changes His sleeping position on this Ekadashi, turning from His left to His right side. Because of this divine shift, the day is named Parivartini Ekadashi. The greatness of this Ekadashi was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhisthira.
Yudhisthira once asked, “O Janardana, how can the Supreme Lord sleep and turn? What happens to all living beings during Your rest? Please also tell me how You bound Bali Maharaj and how one should observe Chaturmas.”
Shree Krishna replied, “In Treta-Yuga lived a mighty king named Bali. Though born in the demon dynasty, he was extremely devoted to Me. He performed daily rituals, respected brahmanas, and offered sacrifices for My pleasure.
Bali once conquered the kingdom of Indra. When the devas sought My refuge, I incarnated as Vamanadeva, a dwarf brahmana, and approached Bali asking for three steps of land.”
The Lord continued, “When Bali agreed, My dwarf form expanded into the massive Trivikrama form. With My first step, I covered the earth. With My second, I covered the heavens. Then I asked Bali where I should place My third step.”
Bali bowed and offered his head. The Lord placed His foot on his head, humbling him and sending him to Patalaloka. Blessed by Bali’s devotion, the Lord promised to reside in his palace.
On Parivartini Ekadashi, Bali Maharaj installed the deity of Vaman Bhagwan in his residence. From this day until Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartik, Shree Hari continues His divine rest on Sheshshaiya.
‘Parivartini’ means 'of change' symbolizing when the Lord turns His side. Those who observe this Ekadashi with devotion wash away their sins and earn immense spiritual merit.
It is said that Bhagwan is placed in a wooden boat and floated on water on this day, reminding devotees of the time when Krishna took the gopis across the Yamuna river.
One should offer items such as yoghurt, rice, and silver as charity, keep jagran through the night, sing bhajans, and strengthen devotion toward Shree Hari.
