Devshayani Ekadashi

Devshayani Ekadashi

The 11th day of the bright half of Ashadh is known as Padma Ekadashi (more commonly known as Devshayani Ekadashi). It is the beginning of Chaturmaas (“chatur” means four and “maas” means months), the four auspicious monsoon months which are full of festivals and celebrations. These months in the Hindu calendar are Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadarpada and Ashvin.

According to the Purans, from this day onwards Lord Vishnu takes rest in Ksheer Sagar. Naturally, all oceans, rivers and ponds attain divinity due to His presence. This is why holy bathing is considered extremely sacred during this period. A devotee who observes strict austerities during these four months becomes absolved of sins and receives immeasurable virtues.

One should observe discipline and avoid indulgence in sensual pleasures during Chaturmaas. Ekadashi is the day of cleansing and penance — nothing pleases God more than sincere austerity. Starting from this day, a devotee should take a vow for extra devotion and spiritual practice.

Shikshapatri Verse 76

“All my followers shall undertake special religious observances during the four months of monsoon. Those who are weak may observe them only during Shravan.”

Shikshapatri Verse 77 & 78

“These special observances include:

  • Listening to discourses on the life and teachings of the Lord
  • Reading sacred scriptures
  • Singing kirtans glorifying God
  • Performing Maha Pooja
  • Chanting the Swaminarayan Maha Mantra
  • Reciting hymns
  • Walking around the image of God (Pradakshina)
  • Full prostration before God (Shastang Dandvat Pranam)

On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, one should submit themselves to their Guru and begin one of these observances with full devotion, praying for strength to follow them throughout Chaturmaas.

Food restrictions during these months are also significant. Scriptures mention avoiding: vegetables in Shravan, curd in Bhadarpada, milk in Ashvin, and certain pulses in Kartik. Devotees should also avoid onion, garlic, watermelon, radish, sugarcane, and similar items during Chaturmaas.

These observances must be performed purely for devotion, not for worldly gains — solely for the pleasure of Supreme Lord Swaminarayan.
