200 Years of Vandu Sahajanand Pad

History of the Pad

It is the year 1880. It was the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha of Magha(Maha) month. In Gadpur, Shreeji Maharaj performed his daily bathing ritual in the morning and sat down in Dadakhachar's court near the room of Vasudevanarayan. Sadguru Shri Gopalanand Swami, Shri Premanand Swami, Shri Yogananda Swami and other Santos and Dadakhachar, Surakhachar, Parvatbhai and other haribhaktos were sitting in the sabha.

At that time, a Brahmin devotee named Surajram from Seval came there.(Who was the brahmin father of Premanand Swami) He was covered with vermilion (Sindur) on his forehead, held a trident(Trishul) in his hand and tied a red handkerchief on his head. He came to Maharaj and did dandavat from a distance. Then, taking his seat facing Maharaj, he said:

" Oh Sahajanand Swami! You are God, if you give me permission, I will sing a song of "Mataji" to you." Maharaj smiled and said: “Sure, Please sing ” Brahmin devotee, on receiving the permission of Maharaj, started singing with a melody:

"Maa Pava Te Gadh Thi, Utarya Ma Kaali Re"

"Vasavyu Champa Ner, Pava Vali Re"

Shriji Maharaj looked at Premanand swami and said swami do you know any kirtan of this tune, swami said yes and started singing:

"Purushotam Puran Brahm, Sahajanand Swami"

"Jene Bhajta Chute Karma, Sahajanand Swami"

Shriji Maharaj looked asked the brahmin devotee do you know any other garbo of mataji and brahmin devotee said yes and started singing:

"Maaji Maare Garbe Ramvaa Avo, Bhaavanima Kaal Ka Re Lol"

"Maaji Tara Mukhni Marodta Joi, Lobhanu Mukh Chand Tanu Re Lol"

"Maaji Taru Mukhdu Jovane Kaj, Ave Che Kuvar Nandna Re Lol"

Brahmin devotee kept singing with melody and great emotion. Maharaj was pleased with his singing and the melody of the kirtan and gave her a pagh. Then Maharaj looked at Premanand Swami who was sitting in the assembly and said:

Swami did you like the kirtan and the raag of it? The Dhaar of the kirtan is very beautiful, isn't it? The singer described the glory of Mataji and her Murti in with great eloquence and passion. Something like this should be made!

"Premanand swami understood the meaning of Maharaj's words. On the thirteenth night itself, Premasakhi, taking the direct inspiration of Shriji Maharaj Murti, became engrossed in his murti and composed the 'Vandu Sahajanand Rasrup' 'Dhyani Garbi'.

On the next day, On Mahavadi Chaudash of 1880 (28th February 1824), on the day of Shivratri, Shriji Maharaj was seated on the veranda outside the east facing rooms of Dada Khachar's Darbar. He was dressed entirely in white clothes and was wearing a new, white kanthi made from tulsi beads around his neck. Tassels of yellow flowers decorated his pagh, and garland of flowers were hanging around his neck A sabha of munis and haribhaktos from various places had gathered before him.

Shriji Maharaj ordered that sing kirtan, so Premananda Swami stood up. He had a sarangi in his hand. He bowed to Maharaj and picked up the kirtan

"Vandu Sahajanand Rasrup, Anupam Sar Ne Re Lol"

"Jene Bhajta Choote Fand, Kare Bhav Paarne Re Lol"

"Samru Pragat Roop Sukhdham, Anupam Naam Ne Re Lol"

"Jene Bhav Brahmadik Dev, Bhaje Taji Kaamne Re Lol"

He started by bowing to Sri Hari, Premsakhi gradually started describing the beauty of Shriji Maharaj's appearance . Swami went on singing one pad after another passionately describing Maharaj's murti. All the listeners were absorbed in the trance of ethereal love while listening to the amazing pad's. Everyone thought that we do darshan every day but we have never seen the Lord the way Premananda sees him. Premsakhi has really captured maharaj murti in his heart. After 8th Pad was finished , Maharaj applauded Premanand Swami. And everyone shouted at once " Sahajanand Swami Maharaj Ni Jay ". And then maharaj started sharing his feeling about the kirtan.

"The kirtans you sang were very wonderful. After listening to them I thought in my mind, "Since this sadhu thinks about Bhagwan's svarup in this way, let me get up and prostrate before him. "If a person is able to think about Bhagwan in his antah-karans in this manner, and if he were to die while still harbouring such a desire for Bhagwan, he would definitely not have to take another birth. If he engages in such dhyan of Bhagwan, he has certainly attained Parampad while alive. In addition, he can be said to be in the process of becoming a niranna-mukta just like the niranna-muktas in Shvet-Dvip. Such a person performs the bodily activities that are necessary without effort. In fact, one who is able to think about Bhagwan's svarup like this has become fulfilled and has nothing more left to achieve. On the other hand, if a person dies while thinking about things other than Bhagvan, there will be no end to his miseries for countless millions of years. So, now that such an opportunity has arisen, one should seize it and, after discarding any thoughts about objects other than Bhagwan, should think upon His swarup only.

(Vachanmrut : Gadhada Madyam Prakran - 48)

Vandu Pad will be celebrrating it's 200th anniversary on March 9 , 2024 , let's all take a pledge to sing such amazing vandu pad daily and sing it with passion to please maharaj and to break free from the cycle of death and birth. And last, let us remember Premanand Swami who gave us such wonderful dhyan pad.
